Music Sessions
 |
The music based therapy sessions are as varied as the clients with whom I work. At Panacea Music we believe in a person-centred approach therefore the starting place is the client, building on skills and qualities they already possess. Individual or group sessions can be arranged depending on your needs. I can work in the client establishment but also provide workshops, individual and group therapy at my well-equipped studio in Rhuddlan which includes a range of hi-tech sensory equipment and recording facilities as well as traditional instruments. |
I bring together ideas and techniques from a number of therapeutic approaches including; music therapy, musical interaction therapy, intensive interaction, pre-therapy contact etc…
Why music?
Music moves, enchants and heals. It can alter the heartbeat and breathing to relax or energize. It can be experienced and enjoyed by all people regardless of age, music ability or intellect.
As such music is a powerful and versatile tool for use with people with special needs and can be used to help improve:
- Listening
- Memory
- Concentration
- Coordination
- Spatial awareness
- Self-esteem
- Relaxation
- Social skills
- Fine and gross motor skills
As children develop through the early years music will enhance their physiology, intelligence, and behaviours. The effects are real and measurable.
Studies have shown, for example that:
- Music can calm or stimulate the movement and heart rate of a baby in the womb.
- Premature infants who listen to classical music in their intensive care units gain more weight, leave the hospital earlier, and have a better chance of survival.
- Young children who receive regular music training demonstrate better motor skills, math ability, and reading performance than those who don't.
- High school students who sing or play an instrument score up to 52 points higher on SAT tests than those who do not.
- College students who listen to ten minutes of Mozart's Sonata for Two Pianos in D Major (K. 448) tend to score higher on the spatial-temporal portion of IQ tests immediately afterward.

Adult musicians' brains generally exhibit more EEG (brainwave) coherence than those of non-musicians-and even differ anatomically in cases when the musicians began their training before the age of age seven.
Music and song can reawaken memories in people with dementia and so bring about reminiscing thereby encouraging communication and establishing psychological contact. |
Moving to music can aid those with neurological and movement disorders to improve their balance, their gait and range of movement.
Music can aid those suffering from strokes to overcome speech disorders.
Music can bring about relaxation and thereby provide relief from acute and chronic pain.
Music can lift the spirit and elevate the mood providing relief from depression.
For persons with autism music can help interrupt patterns of isolation and social withdrawal and improve eye contact, language development and reduce sound sensitivity.
By using the sounds and rhythms of the client I meet them on their ground using their language in an attempt to establish and maintain psychological contact and develop interaction and communication.
